ATTN: Music-Lovers — HELP SAVE THE BRASS LANTERN
Due to the relentless recession, the steady decline of patronage, and for various other reasons (any thing that could possibly break in the last year, HAS), the Brass Lantern joins the long list of privately owned companies in serious danger of closing its doors forever!! The venue is currently on the market and will continue to be, until sold or until their business begins to thrive again.
The Brass Lantern has been a landmark for live music in Reading, Pennsylvania since around 2001, hosting prime national touring acts such as Melvin Seals & JGB, DJ Flow (of the Chappelle Show), The Recipe, RAQ, and Michael Glabicki (of Rusted Root), just to name a few. More importantly, it has been the “stepping stone” venue for hundreds of smaller jam bands, building solid fan foundations for bands such as Lotus, Pnuma Trio, Quagmire Swim Team, Juggling Suns, Frog Holler and many others.
These bands played (and some are still playing) multiple shows at the Brass Lantern in order to capture the hearts of Reading live music fans and create the “travelling music fan” in an era where live shows (and turnout for live shows) is in direct proportion to keeping each band travelling and performing, thus keeping the band together. Some of these bands have moved on to bigger venues and large festivals largely in part to building their fanbases at the smaller clubs across the country like the Brass Lantern.
By consistently providing the quality live music stated above, and using mainly word-of-mouth promotion with bits of Internet blogs and posts by its proud staff and satisfied patrons over the years, the Brass Lantern has gained the reputation as “PA’s Best All-Around Small Venue“, and truly is a hidden gem (although scuffed) nestled in the city of Reading. People connect at the Brass Lantern, whether it’s over a fine craft beer or a top-end mixed drink, over a game of darts or pool, or over some top notch live music; all patrons, whether it’s their first time there, or they’re a regular customer, are assured a safe and fun time. It is for this reason that people want to come back. Many patrons who come in from out of town remark, “this bar reminds me of my hometown bar” and it’s because we treat bands and out-of-town concert-goers so kindly and with open arms (yes, this is still possible in the heart of the city).
Simply put, the Brass Lantern is the reason PlusVibes Productions was even created.
So, I plead with you to KEEP THE BRASS LANTERN ALIVE.
Come in and spend a little money – have a drink or have a bite to eat, catch up with good friends and good people, see the best live music that Reading has to offer, and TELL SOME FRIENDS ABOUT the Brass Lantern. We honestly have some of the best food & drink specials around the city and we absolutely need all the business we can get, plus we love seeing new faces!
I actually bartend every Tuesday evening from 5pm until 2am, with our $1.25 Taco special (chicken, beef, or beans, 7-10pm) along with $6 domestic pitchers. I am also usually playing some of the best Brass Lantern live show recordings from over the years on our soundsystem. Do you have a request? Do you want to talk about good music? I would love to chat.
Is there a live show from the Brass Lantern that you would love to have a copy? I personally extend an invitation to anyone wanting a copy of a live recording to come in, have a couple drinks, maybe eat some tacos, write down the show you want, and I will personally make you a copy for free(first come, first served). It will be ready for pick up the following week (there, I got ya’ for two visits). All I ask is that you buy a drink or two each time you stop by!
I thank you for your continued support of live music in the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, and I hope to see you soon.

Friday the 13th with Quagmire Swim Team @ The Brass

Billed as the DAY After Party for the November 12th show at the Silo Nightclub with 2020Soundsystem and BioDiesel, Reading music fans are treated to a rare performance by rock/electronica veterans Quagmire Swim Team at the Brass Lantern on Friday the 13th of November.
It’s been since February 21st, 2009 since their last appearance anywhere, coincidentally it was at the first PlusVibes event at the Silo Nightclub, opening for the New Deal. What an event that was! It was one of the biggest crowds they have ever played in front of, and they played their hearts out! That tends to happen every time they come to Reading, no matter if it is at the Silo, at the Brass Lantern, at a small private party in Muhlenberg, or on the deck of a superfan’s condo (wink) in Exeter at an after party.
We are so proud that Quagmire Swim Team calls Reading, Pennsylvania their “home away from home”, and we know this will be another magical night of music and friends. There’s no reason to have to pitch it any further, because those who know will surely be there, and those who don’t know – well, you should really find out!
Sharpshooter It looks like this show should be at maximum capacity, so we would like to recommend coming early, and don’t forget to bring your 2020 ticket stub to receive $3 OFF your entry to the Quagmire show.
Also, this event coincides with a grand weekend of PlusVibes sponsored events in the Reading area, with the 2020Soundsystem show on Thursday, Quagmire Swim Team on Friday, the phenomenal microbrew tasting festival called Brewphoria 6, at Canal St. Pub on Saturday early evening, and then ending the weekend right on Saturday with “Albright College Senior Night” at the Brass Lantern
August Rush movie with musical residency “Three’s Company“, featuring DJ Gregg Nyce versus DJ Evolution, with mind blowing visuals by VjcA.
So, we encourage you to spend a weekend in Reading, Pennsylvania.
See the appropriate venue’s website for additional information or email info@plusvibes with any questions or comments.

3 on the Tree and PUSH – THIS Weekend @ The Brass

November kicks the Brass Lantern music schedule into high gear. They have the fireplace roaring every night (when needed) and the fall/winter vibe is in full effect – the scarves, the hats, and the gloves are sure tell signs.
Starting the weekend off on Friday night, November 6th, is local rock band, 3 on the Tree. Performing mostly originals with some recognizable solid covers thrown in each live show, these four good friends show their compatibility with catchy lyrics and fun, dance-able jams.
3 on the Tree hits the Reading circuit pretty actively, with shows at Bertie’s Inn, Bixler’s Lodge, the Reading Phillies First Energy Stadium (spring/summer), and the California Bar & Grill. They have a special performance that Saturday, November 7th at the Turning Leaf Musicfest in Boyertown, sharing the stage with artists that have performed at the Brass Lantern, such as Hillbilly Shakespeare and NiHa Haven.
Saturday brings back Harrisburg area live electro dub step band, PUSH. The dance beats will be flowing this night as the now three piece rolls through Reading again. It’s been a while, but the time gap has enabled some tightening up musically and in numbers (they lost guitarist, Ryan Collins, in August), which gave them room to improve individually while still creating the sound of a 4-piece. As of recent, they have enlisted the help of Ten Tigers‘ guitarist Kyle Hollenger for some of their Fall gigs when he is available.
The change was evident at their recent opening spot for Johnny Raab’s BioDiesel at The Note, a new club in West Chester, Pennsylvania, where they were able to sit back and set a groove, and hit the right middle notes to make every head in that dark room bob for the entire set. PUSH has also recently played gigs at the Spy Club (Harrisburg), Canal Club (Richmond, VA), and River St. Jazz Cafe (Wilkes-Barre). They are bring their similar genre friends Kobra Commander into town for their first time at the Brass on Saturday..

2020Soundsystem and BioDiesel @ The Silo, 11/12

In support of their second album, “Falling“, 2020Soundsystem hits the U.S. in November after touring Europe in September and October, and PlusVibes Productions is proud to host their only Philadelphia-area appearance on Thursday, November 12th, 2009 at the Silo Nightclub
just outside Reading, Pennsylvania.
The 4-piece live electronica band consists of Ralph Lawson (DJ – beats & loops), Danny “Dubble D” Ward (drums), Fernando Pulichino (bass), and Julian Sanza (keys).
Their acclaimed first album “No Order” featured guest vocalists and a live set recorded at Sonar festival. The task of the second album has been to develop the bands own vocals and most importantly to capture the energy and flow of their live performance. 2020Soundsystem have always been about live shows. In fact live gigs came first, even before there were any tracks.
In 2005 the Soundsystem were invited to play the world re-knowned Sonar festival. Not only did they play it but they closed the whole festival on the famous outdoor stage as daylight came up for 10,000 people. This gig really propelled the project and offers now came in from around the world. The band found festivals were the perfect place for a show of their size and have to date played many of the most important ones on the planet including playing to 25,000 people at Exit Serbia and Creamfields Argentina. Other festival highlights include playing at Glastonbury, T in the Park, Creamfields, Global Gathering, Skolbeats Brasil, Sync Athens, and Homelands and Fortdance Russia. клуб откровенного стриптиза
The group already realized that the key to their success was live shows so they arranged to record the set at Sonar including positioning several mics to capture the crowd noise. They now had enough tracks to complete the first album and present it on two discs entitled “Sweatshop Studios” and “Live at Sonar”. 2007 saw the band touring “No Order” across Europe, South America, and Australia.
In 2008, it was another invitation by a festival that opened up another continent, this time America. Camp Bisco 7 in Mariahville, NY proved to be a huge exposure gig for 2020, as people in the U.S., particularly ravers and Disco Biscuits fans, just started to get acquainted with their sound.
Little did Ralph Lawson and the guys know, but the Bisco-attendees were anticipating their late night tent set, and by the time they hit the stage, the tent was fully packed with sweaty dancing bodies, tranced by one of the better late night sets of the weekend.
“We had no idea anyone knew us in America…We closed the whole weekend and hit one of those shows where you can do no wrong,” explains Lawson.
As soon as they walked off stage they were signed by AM only (a major US booking agency) and within the year had clocked up 27 shows in 16 cities.
Reading, PA can soon be added to that list of cities, when 2020 comes to town on Thursday, November 12th. The Silo Nightclub will be the venue to accommodate the live electronica fans.
For those drum & bass fans, PlusVibes is also proud to bring back BioDiesel to the area (for the second time in 2009, so far!). Philadelphia’s favorite bassist Clay Parnell and world reknown percussionist Johnny Rabb will be showcasing their intelligent dance music in support.
There has been much talk about their infamous “Rage Stage” set (’til sunrise) at this year’s Camp Bisco to close out the festival.
Local house, breaks, & dubstep DJ, DJ Spacecase will be setting the mood before the bands and in between sets.
MAKE SURE TO MARK THIS DATE ON YOUR CALENDAR!

Bodega, RYAT, Tim Conley, JUGGLING SUNS @ Brass

This weekend is cooking up to be a jam-roast, with instrumental powerhouse Bodega on Friday (10/23) night, and the now 4-piece jam veterans, the Juggling Suns on Saturday (10/24) night at the Brass Lantern.
With the fireplace now in full roar, the Brass Lantern kicks into cold weather mode, which, more importantly, means its peak business (see older blog, “SAVE THE BRASS LANTERN”).
PlusVibes Productions has a full roster of great music scheduled through the New Year at the Brass Lantern, including confirmed shows with fantastic bands such as MIZ (featuring Mike Miz), PUSH, Quagmire Swim Team, Cabinet, Pychedelphia, Flux Capacitor, and a special Brass Lantern Christmas show with Gingham.
The Brass Lantern also features three residency shows every month with DJs Gregg Nyce and Evolution, the Manatawny Creek Ramblers, and the Good Lovin’ Jam Band featuring members of Pangea Acoustic and Neo Trio. See the Brass Lantern‘s official website for further information.
THIS Friday, October 23rd, are the young (but certainly
veterans on the jam band circuit) Bodega. Billed as high-energy dance music, they always kill it at the Brass Lantern. You can hear their past shows from the Brass The General rip , available now on Internet Archive.
This time they are bringing the duo RYAT and Tim Conley (Grimace Federation) with them. The duo perform a very unique electronic show with RYAT laying down captivating vocals with very spacey effects, and Tim playing his guitar through heavy effects as well, with both of them controlling beats, loops, and samples on laptops. The whole show has a very Björk overall feel.
On Saturday, October 24th, the Juggling Suns come back to town. The Suns have reduced their numbers to four, losing rhythm guitarist and vocalist Tim Morris, leaving the rhythm and solos to guitar master, Mark Diomede – a feat that Mark conquered immediately, as evident in the most recent rain-soaked Sun’s awesome performance at the Dragonfly Equinox Festival
on September 26th at Blue Falls Grove.
The new ensemble has opened up space to return to its roots – the long intricate jam (much to any music fan’s delight). The live shows have become havens for those wanting to dance, to sing, to play air guitar, and most importantly, leave every venue or festival grounds with HUGE smiles on their faces, saying, “Damn, that Juggling Suns show brought the house down!”
It’s a sight and saying that I have seen and heard multiple times this year. This Saturday will be no different at the Brass Lantern. Don’t miss it!

Spectacular New Deal Show at the Silo Nightclub

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM CHRIS@PLUSVIBES:
It has taken me two weeks to recover from the monstrosity that is the New Deal. Their sound engineer, Kevin, said it all, when he turned to me in the soundboard area about mid-way into the second set and said,
“This is a REALLY good New Deal show!”
Out of the several times I have seen them, and maybe I am a bit biased (wink), I have to say that this was the best I have ever seen them play indoors.
Hack! buy From the view I had side-stage facing out to the crowd, the vibe was most certainly on point too. Both floors were physically bouncing from the heavy bass and incessant dancing. Sweaty shirts and perma-smiles were inevitable by all that were in the trance that is the New Deal.
Oh yeah, and who could forget my good friends, Quagmire Swim Team? The musical journey that they embarked on that evening was one for the record books as well. Every time they play they impress a whole new crowd of people, and that night was no different. They were truly on top of their game. We can only hope and pray that the journey continues and more music lovers are granted the opportunity to experience and enjoy what I have been blessed to be a part of for the last 5 years.

Reading native, J. Wilds has been added to the bill to spin before & in between sets.
I am also very proud to announce that my great friends, QUAGMIRE SWIM TEAM has just been added to the bill, in the supporting slot at 9pm.
Since I met them in 2003, we have shared many journeys and they have supported and helped me with anything I asked since then, most importantly
donating their services for a benefit show for my best friend. They are an inspiration to me & the community of friends I have met through their circle over the years. That circle has grown to include me and my “second family” and now I am able to share their music, their vibes, and their circle with a diverse crowd of New Deal fans.
I was turned on to the New Deal by my older brother in the late 1990′s and, because I only heard some bootlegs, I often doubted the fact (it seemed musically impossible) that they did not use loops or sequencers in their live shows. It wasn’t until 2003-2004 when I was able to start seeing them live at various venues & festivals (most memorably at all the Camp Biscos) and my theories were quickly disproved.
I also started booking for the Brass Lantern around that time, and from day one, my mission was to get the New Deal to Reading, Pennsylvania. They have always been a fan favorite and I was approached many times throughout the years by their Pennsylvania fans requesting a show in Reading.
“I know they’ll come; they’d love it here,” I always said.
My pitch was, “Let’s bring them in under a pseudonym,” like the Disco Biscuits would do, playing shows under the alias of ‘The Perfume’.
Looking back, I think that, with the limited space inside the Brass Lantern and regardless of any pseudonym they would have used, it would have been quite uncomfortable in there. Two thoughts come to mind: sardines & fire hazard. I know that it would have still been a night of fire (maybe, literally). Many artists that have been guests of the Brass Lantern admit that, “…something magical tends to happen onstage there.”
It took a few years, a plethora of booked shows, and the formation of PlusVibes Productions, but with the help of Phil Egenthal & the Philosophy Agency (thank you, Phil for bearing with me and all the emails over the years), we finally found a home for the New Deal in Reading, & now my booking dream has been fulfilled.
They are ending their short Winter 2009 tour in Reading, with stops in Troy, NY (2/18), Burlington, VT (2/19), and Northampton, MA (2/20). I hope that they keep Reading as a destination on their tour schedule for as long as they continue to play music together!
The Silo, nestled right outside the city limits of Reading, is a 2-floor, 1100-person venue with a sunken dance floor. It is conveniently located directly next to the Quality Inn – Airport, and less than 1 mile from the Holiday Inn – Airport, which offers a free shuttle to and from the venue. More information on the Silo can be read here.
J. Wilds will be spinning upstairs in the booth, starting immediately when the doors open and until Quagmire Swim Team starts at 9pm. He will also be spinning in between the New Deal’s sets.
See you there.
Chris @ PlusVibes
End of an Era: The Brass Lantern To Change Ownership
Purchased by John and Ginger Ortiz in 1999, the Brass Lantern, located in the Northeast section of Reading, Pennsylvania, started off as your typical neighborhood bar and restaurant, with a standard American-style menu but focusing mainly on the [at that time] growing fascination with microbrews, which is simply another term for handcrafted beers produced in limited amounts (which varies by region).
The Brass Lantern featured seven different beers on draft and a massive bottled beer selection from microbreweries around the world. If you wanted a “good” beer in town, you came to Northeast Reading.
After building a successful clientele in a short amount of time, the Brass Lantern became a pioneer in the live original music scene in the Berks County area. They purchased an entire sound system, built a stage, and began showcasing the best musical talent in the area, such as Frog Holler, The Worms, The Youngers, Hexbelt, and Dakini. All these bands built a large part of their fan base at the Brass Lantern over the years.
With talent like those bands listed above, the Brass Lantern quickly fit the bill as “Berks County’s BEST Original Live Music” and they established themselves as THE venue to play in the area. This, in turn, brought the Brass Lantern to the attention of touring bands nation-wide, and they began to receive press kits and demos from bands around the country (so many that they filled an entire coat closet full of demo CDs!).
Acts such as Brothers Past, Townhall, Fat Mama, RAQ, The Recipe, and Lotus all had multiple successful shows at the Brass Lantern in the early part of the millenium before becoming headlining national touring bands.
By 2003 the Brass Lantern had caught the attention of NATIONAL touring acts and hosted maximum capacity shows with Michael Glabicki (of multi-platinum record selling band, Rusted Root) and Melvin Seals & JGB.
It was shortly after these shows when +VIBES founder, Chris Kratz came on staff at the Brass Lantern as a bartender and, by the end of that year, took over the booking responsibilities from the co-owner, John, who had booked all the phenomenal shows up until then (those were some big shoes to fill).
From there, it was full steam ahead for live music at the Brass Lantern, with shows two, three, four, and sometimes fives days a week for several years. It showcased THE premier artists (of ALL genres) in the jamband circuit, including Quagmire Swim Team, Alchemy, Jazzam, Cabinet, Living Earth, Future Rock, Jah Works, Pnuma Trio, BioDiesel, Boris Garcia, Kris Kehr & Julie Edlow, Juggling Suns, Family Groove Company, Natural Breakdown, U-Melt, Mike Miz, Codename, Bodega, Ronnie Penque (of New Riders of the Purple Sage), Jeff Bujak, David Cullen (Grammy winner), Marco Benevento, and many more. It is roughly estimated that, through the years, the Brass Lantern has hosted over 1500 shows with over 200 bands with over 600 individual musicians.
Those numbers demand respect, especially in the fact that 90 per cent of those bands performed their own original material and not just a night full of cover songs (with the exception of the Grateful Dead and “reggae nights”), so every night was its own unique show.
It was undoubtedly evident that the Brass Lantern had established itself as a landmark for live original music in Reading, Pennsylvania.
But while the music flourished over the years, Father Time had taken his toll and danced his heavy boots all over the Brass Lantern property, leaving a trail of evidence – a leaky roof, a pothole-ridden parking lot, a shattered front marquee, broken tables, chairs, & bar stools, broken beer coolers, and many other little tedious broken things throughout the building.
Showing the utmost respect to what it had become in the music scene yet having its demeanor not going un-noticed, people have even called it the “Brokedown” Lantern, in reference to a Grateful Dead classic.
So these extra repair bills and responsibilities, in addition to a city with a rising crime rate, as well as a declining national economy (which hurts the overall patronage to the venue) and that equals a financial liability for the current owner, who has a family including a newborn to worry about, and also a thriving interior & exterior renovation business.
Understandably, the business was put on the market in 2009, and it is now official – the Brass Lantern has been SOLD! The final day of the current ownership is tentatively Thursday, April 29th, 2010.
Although deeply saddened by the situation, PlusVibes Productions keeps its head high in knowing that it has provided the best hospitality around to all the artists, the crews, the patrons, and our beloved Brass Lantern “family” of regular customers, and also, that it has been such a positive experience for everyone involved – the memories, the lasting friendships made, the laughs, the tears, the smiles, and most of all, the MUSIC!
It will NEVER be forgotten.
After speaking with the NEW owner, he has stated that he wants to give the Brass Lantern a much needed makeover and improve the general security inside and outside the venue, but keep the overall vibe the same. Upon the urging of his wife, who ironically worked in the building when it was a seafood restaurant, he plans to simply name it, the ‘New’ Brass Lantern.
We are very anxious to see what the future will bring for the landmark Berks County venue and hope that +VIBES will be able to continue to provide the same quality live music to our beloved community of music lovers at the Brass Lantern.
Stay tuned for information on that as the changeover approaches.
In the meantime, +VIBES has put together a proper lineup of music from now until April 30th, with some of the artists that have been our true friends throughout the years.
Please be sure to catch one of your favorite acts before the changeover, and say goodbye to the current owner. In honor of the years past, we are encouraging patrons to write down on a small piece of paper, a positive experience or good story about the Brass Lantern and attach it to our band wall.
